A Polo Match Like No Other–Setting a Luxury Standard in St. Moritz
Every year on the last weekend in January, St. Moritz – no stranger to hosting global celebrities, royalty and industry titans – focuses its hospitality on a very special group of guests: a stable of Thoroughbred polo ponies. They’ve descended on the Engadin valley – along with the players, and spectators – for one of the must attend gatherings on Switzerland’s social calendar: the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz.
This year, team Maserati will be co-captained by Russians Zhanna Bandurko and Valery Mishchenko. As in 2019, they will be playing with Robert Strom of France and Max Charlton of England. Team Azerbaijan Land of Fire will be captained by Elcin Jamalli. All eyes will also be following Team Badrutt’s Palace of last year’s winner Melissa Ganzi from the USA. The experienced player, who is the first woman ever to win the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz, will surely be intent on repeating her previous victory.
The elite polo circuit’s three-day tournament will feature these teams playing for the Cartier trophy across a frozen, snow-covered lake. This is the only polo competition anywhere in the world played on ice. And as for those special guests: The 100 horses involved are brought in from Spain, France, and the U.K. several days before the matches where they are pampered in state-of-the-art stables on the banks of the lake.
Speaking of pampering, those who have come to follow the four teams and their chukkas (matches), are catered to at the highest level. The VIP experience not only includes reserved seating with prime views, but an endless flow of Perrier-Jouët champagne, Cohiba cigars, blankets for warmth (should their personal furs not suffice) and caviar canapés with every match. The VIP experience also provides lounge access, and a catered lunch by Badrutt’s Palace Hotel on the frozen lake with premiere views of the playing field backdropped by the Engadin mountains. Major sponsors such as Deutsche Bank, Cartier and Maserati host five-star dinners and cocktail events for their current and prospective clientele, often catered by celebrity chefs flown in specifically for this event.
The tournament is the brainchild of Reto Gaudenzi, who came up with the idea in 1983, and who has watched the small event first held on a snowy field blossom into this annual extravagant sporting spectacle that takes a year to plan. Workers spend three weeks setting up the grandstands, VIP tents and dining areas on the lake. The Board of Directors consists of Piero Dillier (President), Reto Gaudenzi (Vice-president and CEO and five-time past winner of the tournament), and Arndt Küchel.
